I captured image with a housed Nikon D2X camera & fisheye lens while bobbing in the water and acting as the 'buoy'. Instructed my buddy Todd to sail his SC17 'danger-close'. Reckon I need a 'helmet'!

How fast is the AC72 going in this picture???
Well mother nature tells us that we cannot create or destroy energy.
Therefore the max height of the spray is proportional to the velocity squared of the boat.
Let's estimate the spray to have a max height of 30ft.
The potential energy of the max height of the spray (w x h) equals salt water density x vel**2/ 2 x 32.2.
64 x 30 = 64 x V**2/64.4, let the 64 cancel the 64.4.
Therefore V**2 = 1920
And Vel = 43.8ft/sec or 30mph and that may be a little optimistic.
Maybe the spray is only 25ft high or 27mph.
Or 20ft high, Vel = 24.5mph.

That is some nifty thinking, calculating speed from spray height..... pretty cool, Bill.
