Took the new (to me) 1981 SC 17 out this morning for her shakedown/maiden voyage. I was very impressed by her manners. I have a few niggling adjustments to do
the mast ball pin (in my case a stainless bolt and nut) is too long and the jib sheets kept hanging up on it - it looks like almost any pin is going to present the same problem. Does anyone have a suggestion or is there a part that I can purchase that isn't going to snag the jib sheets?
Speaking of jib sheets! - the cam cleat that's attached to the block is at too shallow an angle - plenty of times sailing as close to the wind as possible w/the jib pulled in tight I had to move across the tramp to uncleat the sheet
Gaskets on the transom inspection hatches are perished and shot - probably where the water ingress is
All in all tho - a great first sail! - I got to test out my ramp system off the sea-wall which worked surprisingly well and basically get to know the boat!
I could have done with the real 10kts that were forecast. On my run back home I was making 4mph tops which I would think indicates significantly less than a 10kt blow! I'll remember to fire up the gps ahead of the sail next time so I can see my top speeds etc. Regardless it was fabulous to get back on the water sailing instead of breathing the 2 stroke from my other vessel
