mast and halyard hook ring

I had been looking for a SC 17 mast for several years. I found one and the owner was willing to give me all his parts which included hulls which I plan on restoring. The mast I received had 4 bracket, 2 on either side, spaced out and attached to the mast and holes at center of those backets which seems to me that the mast had spreaders at some time. My last mast didn't have them, did some other version of the 17 have a taller mast or narrower section that it would have the need for spreaders?
Also, is their a "how to" tutorial on how to attach a hook ring at the top on the sail?
Anyones help would be greatly appreciated.

Regarding the hook at the top of the mast. If the hook is attached to the mast on the port side of the mast, pull the sail and ring all the way to the top of the mast. 2 people needed. 1st person, keep tension on the main halyard, second person, stand on the ground in front of the fore beam and force the trailing edge to the starboard side. While the second person has the mast hard over the first person can let go of the tension, the ring should settle onto the hook. Person 1 can relaesr the mast and test the connection by pulling on the foot of the main.
That is how I do it.

Regarding spreaders on an SC17. The SC17 mast has always been the same extrusion and has always been without spreaders. That being said, the only SC17 that I know with Spreaders was Eric Robert's boat that he was sailing in the early 1990's. As it turns out the SC17 mast and SC19 (non XL) mast were identical with one exception, the SC19 had spreaders. I am guessing it might be possible that your mast was off a SC19.
