Ft Walton Beach Race Last Weekend

Post by Bill Roberts »

Hi Guys,
I think there was a race for the 22s and other beach cats last weekend.
What happened??? I think the race was called white or wheat or wheat or rye or something like that.

4 - ARC 22s Raced

Post by Cookie Monster »

Hey Bill,

Meant to reply to you last week, but ran out of time. We had a great time racing the week end before last. Saturday was a distance race for about 32 miles. We went from Navarre Beach west, about half way to Pensacola Beach, then back east through the the Navarre Bridge to the entrance to the Narrows, rounded a bouy and headed back to Navarre Beach for the finish. There were 4 ARC 22s, Mike Kelley, Jim Moody, Glen Marsh and Kevin and I on Adrenalin. There were 3 classes, Spinnaker and Non-Spinnaker, and a Hobie Wave class. The race started off with about a 10 mile spinnaker run, then it was close hauled / slight reach the rest of the race. First around the mark was Tom Turlington on his I17R, then Mike, Mark Smith, and Kirk Newkirk on separate I20s, and the rest of us within 2/3 of a mile all together. The waterline worked for us on the way back, and all 4 ARC 22s finshed boat for boat in the first four. The smaller cats all raced a shorter course avoiding the run to the Narrows and just finishing back at Juana's.

The second day, we attempted to run two races windward / leeward about an hour each. We got the first one in with no problems, but had to call the next one as we could see weather moving on us from the west. It turned out to be a good decision on the race committee's part. Everyone got in and secured, before the 20-25 mph winds came with 30 mph gusts. The I20s ruled the bouys that morning.

See the results below. I can e-mail you a complete set of results from Sailwave if you want them. Let me know.

The waterline worked for us....

Post by Bill Roberts »

Hi Don,
I don't underestand the waterline comment. How is it used;what does it mean?

A throw back to mono-hull days on displacement boats. Theoretical hull speed, 1.34 times the square root of the waterline. Right?

"The waterline worked for us coming back".

Hi Don,
I have heard this before too. The beach cat sailing public doesn't understand.
The correct equation for high fineness ratio and lightly loaded hulls is: Vmax = a constant x sq rt WL. The constant varies between 4 and 5 depending on hull fineness ratio. But the most important thing to notice about this equation is that the parameter is Vmax!!! It is not V at all speeds or V at some speeds or V at any speed, it is only Vmax that is limited by WL.
When sailing an ARC22 against other catamarans to windward or close reaching, the first big boat speed advantage emerges when the other boat reaches his righting moment limit, his sail thrust limit. The 22 is 3.5ft wider than most other beach cats. This is 41% more righting moment which in the limit can become 41% more sail thrust. Since drag = thrust at steady state speed and drag varies as the sq of boat velocity, then this 41% more thrust can become the sqrt of 1. 41% = 1.20 or 20% more boat speed. This boat speed advantage has nothing to do with WL. We are talking about boat speeds in the 10 to 15 knot range. The second boat speed advantage of the 22 is a top speed advantage and relative to a 20ft boat it is evaluated as the sqrt of 22/20 or about 5%. At 20 knots we are talking about a 1 knot advantage in boatspeed. This is a much smaller boat speed advantage than the righting moment/sail thrust advantage, 20%. Be aware of this and help people understand. There is a boat performance advantage to being a wider boat and it is a big advantage! Your boat has it designed into it, others don't.

Bill,

Your right. I forgot about the wider beam and extra righting moment. Well, it certainly did come into play. We were both trapped out and it was definitely necessary. Never had much trouble keeping the boat down either. We were overpowered a few times, but nothing that wasn't easy to control. We walked right through the fleet. Need to figure out what Mike is doing so we can give him a better race. Thanks for the info.

Hope to see you at RTI in September.
